Move over golf: how padel is becoming the friendliest way to network

Some of the best business relationships have always been built off the clock. On a golf course, over a round of drinks, at the side of a pitch. There is a good reason for that. When people relax and share an experience, the guard comes down and real conversation begins.

The trouble is, the classic setting for all of this, a full day on the golf course, is not for everyone. It can be expensive, time consuming and, if we are honest, a little intimidating for anyone who has never picked up a club.

Enter padel. If you have not tried it yet, you soon will, because it is quickly becoming the friendliest and most inclusive way for business owners to meet, connect and build community.

A sport you can actually pick up

Padel is a brilliant mix of tennis and squash, played in doubles on a small, enclosed court. The rules are simple, the rallies are fun, and almost anyone can enjoy a proper game within their first ten minutes. There is no years of lessons barrier to entry and no need to think of yourself as sporty. You just turn up, laugh a lot and get stuck in.

That accessibility is the whole point. On a padel court, the seasoned managing director and the brand new start-up founder are on a completely equal footing. Everyone is a little bit rubbish at first, and that shared, gentle humbling is a wonderful leveller.

Why it is so good for networking

Padel is played in pairs, so straight away you are working with someone rather than against them. You celebrate the good shots, laugh off the bad ones, and by the end of a game you know each other far better than an hour of small talk over coffee could ever manage.

It ticks every box that makes networking genuinely work:

  • A shared experience that breaks the ice in minutes
  • Teamwork that builds trust naturally
  • Plenty of laughter, which is the fastest route to a real connection
  • Short, social games that fit around a busy day
  • A level playing field where job titles simply do not matter

Sound familiar? It is exactly the sort of relaxed, structured, human connection we build our Ribbons meetings around.

The new, more inclusive version of golf

Golf has long been the go-to for mixing business with pleasure, and there is nothing wrong with a good round. But padel offers all of the relationship-building magic without the half day commitment, the hefty green fees or the feeling that you need to know the etiquette before you dare turn up.

An hour of padel gives you the connection, the conversation and the fun, and you can still be back at your desk for the afternoon. It is networking that welcomes everyone in, whatever their background, budget or handicap.

Rally and Relationships: padel, the Ribbons way

We loved the idea so much that we built an event around it. Rally and Relationships is our pop-up padel series, bringing business owners together on the court for a friendly game and a proper natter afterwards.

It is everything you would expect from Ribbons. Warm, welcoming and genuinely good fun, with no hard sell and no pressure. Just great people, a bit of friendly competition, and the kind of easy-going setting where real relationships are formed. Whether you are a padel regular or you have never held a bat in your life, you will fit right in.

And like all of our events, there is real structure behind the fun. We are proactively creating the conditions for business leaders to meet, connect and support one another, because the strongest communities are built on purpose, not left to chance.

Come and play

If you have been meaning to grow your network but the thought of another stuffy business breakfast leaves you cold, this one is for you. Grab your trainers, bring a guest if you fancy, and come and rally with us.

Keep an eye on our upcoming events to find the next Rally and Relationships pop-up near you, or come along to a regular Ribbons group first and say hello. However you choose to meet us, you will find a room, or a court, full of people who genuinely want to see you do well.

Game on.
